Artificial Intelligence, the Basics

Artificial Intelligence, What Is It?

For many people, artificial intelligence (AI) is confusing. A global study released by Pegasystems Inc. in 2017, revealed consumers needed clarification about what AI really does. Is there a clear definition of AI? A definition would be helpful. Is it any one thing? Many of the world's most intelligent people have yet to agree on a solid definition. The field has certainly grown, blossomed, and advanced at an accelerating pace in recent years.

According to Nils J. Nilsson, "Artificial intelligence is that activity devoted to making machines intelligent, and intelligence is that quality that enables an entity to function appropriately and with foresight in its environment." According to IBM, "artificial intelligence, or AI, is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities."

The definition could be clearer since some electronic devices fall into one of the definitions. A better way to understand what AI is is to look at what AI is doing to understand what it is.

Computers Are Taking Over the World

No, it is not happening, but AI is part of our day-to-day in many ways. Some people are enjoying rides in self-driving cars. The rest of us benefit from AI when using certain apps, such as Lyft which uses algorithms to connect drivers to passengers. Many households and smartphones have AI-assisted software that assists us with tasks when voice commands are given.

E-commerce, customer service, and financial services are also using AI. IBM uses Watson, a cognitive computing system, in day-to-day data analytics in marketing and research, and diagnostic assistance at hospitals for physicians. Google's AI answers e-mails in Inbox, identifies photos in Google Photos, and schedules appointments in G Suite.

What Does AI's Future Look Like?

Experts expect more automation and more ways for businesses to use the technology. Approaching AI with an open mind, the technologies emerging from the field could have a profound impact for the better in the coming decades. However, if we are to reap the full benefits of AI, we first need to trust it. As with many other things in use today, the benefits of AI outweigh the disadvantages.

Lockheed Martin predicts AI is "Human-Centered." It is important to note the interactions humans have had with technology, AI is transforming how humans and machines work together.

The disadvantages indeed do exist. As AI grows, concerns over privacy, surveillance, and biases will grow with it. AI relies on data provided by humans, unlike humans AI cannot use empathy to determine when some details are wrong.

Approaching AI with fear and suspicion, AI development will be slow and it will drive it underground. Recently, Prew Research Center surveys have shown Americans are increasingly cautious about the growing role of AI. Americans are more concerned than excited about AI in daily life. Consumers have voiced their concerns to the Federal Trade Commission about AI, while businesses are worried about short to long-term issues.

Some people think the worst scenario will happen; doomsday. If you rely on the cranks and conspiracy-minded, it is ok. Everyone needs a hobby. Some people are concerned that increasingly powerful AI could prove apocalyptic for humanity.
